Google claims that it will temporarily stop automatically backing up Instagram and WhatsApp photos. This measure is aimed at "saving internet resources" during the COVID-19 pandemic.
With the exception of WhatsApp and Instagram, Google Photos will not back up images from Engadget reports on Facebook and other social media and communication tools.
According to a Google Photos representative, “People are sharing more photos and videos due to COVID-19. To conserve internet resources, backup and sync have been turned off ” Close device folders created by messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and Kik.
Some users find this implementation frustrating; at the same time, others are happy to know about this limitation.
While Sync Now Backup settings are off by default, users can still change the settings at any time. You can also find photos and videos from the Messages app on your device and select individual photos and videos to back up. To do this, turn on Google Photos app, find "Gallery" then select "Photos on device" and tap "View All". Select the folder where you want to back up content and select the specific photos you want to back up. Press "Back Up Now".
Google says that photos and videos previously backed up from the Messages app are not affected.
